Our When It’s Cancer public workshop walks cancer patients and their families through the Personal Cancer Management System (PCMS). The tools and exercises from Drs. Bernay & Porrath’s book When It’s Cancer the 10 Essential Steps to Follow After Your Diagnosis, gives patients and their families guidance to take control and become empowered and informed as they walk the cancer path.
Each attendee is given a tote bag containing the book “When It’s Cancer, the 10 Essential Steps to Follow After Your Diagnosis and a starter notebook to organize their medical information.
Our first workshop, hosted by Gilda’s Club Rochester, NY was a resounding success. The turnout from the members attests to the need cancer patients and their families have for this information.

The Personal Cancer Management System (PCMS) is a system Drs. Porrath & Bernay developed to help cancer patients & their families walk the cancer path. It is comprised of 10 steps, each step having a set of tools and exercises that empowers patients & their families to take charge and be proactive about cancer treatment and care. The PCMS is a comprehensive approach to managing all aspects of living with cancer-medical, emotional, logistical and legal. The tools include: Self-assessments, worksheets and checklists for tracking information to make intelligent, well reasoned choices.
The following chart includes a list of important documents, with space for you to write down where you’ve stored them. Make photocopies of the chart—one for your cancer notebook, plus extras for your medical and legal designates, as well as any family members or friends who may need this information.
This exercise can be deeply rewarding on a personal level. It requires you to think about what your life has meant to you and what you hope it has meant to others.

Sixty-year-old Casey thought that his stage I melanoma had been cured. Eight years after his original diagnosis, he returned for his annual checkup with his treating oncologist.
